CELEBRANTA
Photographic project, existential art Started in 2026, after beginning my studies as a Death Doula
Death approached me, and I had no choice but to look into its eyes. (I try my best to look away, I do, but I can't resist. It's here, looking at me lovingly with all its grief.)
A Celebranta, word in Spanish, is a person who leads or officiates a ceremony, such as a wedding, funeral, or spiritual service.
Death in everyday life
I had never questioned death, or perhaps I had, but not truly. I thought of it as something so obvious, like breathing, something you don't even think about… and that very thing can often be a problem.
All of this automatically led me to meditation, which I still sometimes avoid with excuses (like looking death in the eyes). "Meditate," my father tells me, "all my teachers tell me." I say yes… but I downplayed its importance, little by little I value it, I realize how fundamental it is… MY EXISTENCE And so, From death, From life, From nothingness
I recognize my temporality to feel the infinite Meditating on what?
Being present Hello”
What happened around me?
While my circle of friends, family, and strangers recognized me as “the death girl,” everyone had a story to tell, everyone needed to talk without even being asked. Others simply cried. Others left. A colleague told me, “Recognize your availability to listen; sometimes it’s better to go unnoticed”—tactical invisibility.
Our own culture and that of others
We are struck by other cultures that are, in a Western sense, "more direct and unfiltered" about death, carnivorous consumption, and corpses. Perceiving them as “savage, brutish, dirty, violent, corrupt… as if the Western “meat production” industry (animal slaughter) were a journey to the Garden of Eden. The meat industry practices DETACHMENT, TOXIC COMFORT; one eats meat unaware that one is putting the carcass of an animal into one's digestive system, but rather thinking that one picked that beef patty from the tree in the yard. I'm not saying that eating meat is wrong, but I do deeply question this society's systematic ignorance regarding vital issues, the value of life, the responsibility for our actions, and death. Because this directly impacts our ecological awareness, the care we take in our relationships, the quality of our thoughts, and how we process our emotions. From what I experience within myself and observe in my surroundings, sometimes ignorance masks pain, anguish over lived experiences; other times it's a product of misinformation, of not having had access to another reality; other times I've seen sadism, enjoyment in suffering. alien (from others, from the world); and surely there are countless other reasons…
At funerals today, we also see this “not knowing what to do, what to say.” At my grandmother’s funeral, my sister was told “Congratulations,” which is valid, but judging by the expression on her face, I doubt she did it on purpose.
We distance ourselves from death, we distance ourselves from our nourishment, we distance ourselves from our connections, we distance ourselves from ourselves. What does this experiential escape conceal…
I don’t know,
But I do see that it brings increased consumption of caffeine, testosterone, energy drinks, spicy foods, Viagra, increasingly exacerbated excesses, suicide, murder, polarized relationships, adrenaline-fueled adventures. Far from grounding us, these things detach us further.
I want to feel my embrace even more.
I want to feel your embrace even more.
Here, everyone on Earth
