Mariangela Mussatti, existential artist
Existential refers to building my work at the very moment in which I realize that I am alive, making myself present. Feeling alive means I realize my power to choose, my freedom and the responsibilities that this entails. I consider myself an existence where my artwork “is” the living itself, my life as my highest creation -as well as that of every being. I also describe my art as SSES (subjective, social, ecological, spiritual).
As a multidisciplinary visual artist, I materialize work with the tools of writing, photography, videoart, charcoal, dry and oil pastels, oil paint, pencil, textile techniques and performance. The corporality of the works interests me for the artistic process itself, but not as an objective; its constant transformation or disappearance is frequent. I respect physical materiality just as I value bodies, as mortal temporal-spatial points. I make works in the format of paintings, photos, videos, garden designs and others, considering them a strategy to connect.
Although I consider life and art to be the same thing, I use the signifier ART when I emphasize the act of SEEING and EXHIBITING. I make art to see when I provide space for that wich has no place to appear and I exhibit art to contribute to the pluriversity of life and thus to more fulfilling existences.

Existencial refiere a construir mí obra en el momento mismo en que me doy cuenta que estoy viva, haciéndome presente. Sentirme viva significa tomar noción de mi poder de elegir, de mí libertad y la responsabilidad que ello conlleva. Me considero una existencia donde mi obra “es” el vivir mismo, mi vida como mi máxima creación -así como la de cada ente-. Describo mi arte también como SSEE -subjetivo-social-ecológico-espiritual.
Como artista sensorial multidisciplinar, materializo obra con las herramientas de la escritura, fotografía, videoarte, carbonilla, pasteles secos y al óleo, pintura al óleo, lápiz, técnicas textiles y la performance. La corporalidad de las obras me interesa para el proceso existencial/artístico en sí, pero no como objetivo; siendo frecuente su constante transformación o desaparición. Respeto la materialidad física así como valoro a los cuerpos, cómo puntos temporo-espaciales mortales, considerándola una estrategia para socializar.
Si bien considero que vida y arte son una misma cosa, uso el significante ARTE cuando enfatizo las acciones de VER y MOSTRAR. Hago arte para ver cuando brindo espacio para que aparezca aquello que no tiene lugar y muestro arte para aportar a la pluriversidad de la vida y así de existencias más plenas.
CHAOS is an expositive project of photo essays, with it I seek to show to the world entities with different forms of existence, promoting a fuller life on Planet Earth (pluriversity).
CHAOS is an expositive project—the product of exploratory artistic research—that seeks to showcase different ways of experiencing life on planet Earth (existential pluriversities). I am developing this project throughout my daily life, creating artworks in the form of photographic portraits and written narratives about the entities I encounter and connect with. I refer to “entities” because I broaden the possibility of establishing connections with human and non-human existences, such as animals, insects, plants, minerals, natural phenomena, toys, manufactured goods, communities, and so on. Each one has its own “personal narrative” (PN), a present way of experiencing its existence (its way of living life), which I seek to understand and share with the world. Each PN is unique and, at the same time, in its convergence with other PNs, forms the “common narrative” (CN). The CN is what a group of entities (society, pack, country, institution, community, etc.) recounts about how they experience life. With Project CHAOS I seek to show how the differences of entities converge in a specific CN (the community, territory where I am currently living).
I began this project in 2019 in Argentine Patagonia, and it is currently expanding its reach to the United States, where I was born and currently reside. The portraits and narratives are “experimental documentary”. Its initial exhibition format is on my website, www.mariangelamussatti.com. I am also presenting each stage (territories explored) in physical exhibitions. The goal of sharing this artistic material is to offer viewers the opportunity to discover not only other existences but also other narratives of how life is lived and how it can be lived on planet Earth. This encourages them to broaden their own perspective, opening themselves up in their daily lives to establish new bonds of kinship (with entities they may not have previously perceived).
I use the concept of chaos to highlight that this convergence of perspectives in reality is not static but rather a constant process of becoming. I problematize discursive quietism and the standardization of CN (those normative discourses controlled by sectors of power), which instead of being nourished by the experiential differences of PN , proclaim fixed existential models about what it is to live, coercing and limiting entities.
With Project CHAOS, my objective is to show the world entities in their difference and originality (their noise/chaos within the normative standardization of life), valuing them in their public image, focusing on those who are still unseen or have little global visibility. This fosters openness and a rethinking of PN and CN of the portrayed entities and communities (who gain insight upon seeing and hearing themselves in their portraits and stories), in the viewers (who question and expand their narratives when they see someone different), and in myself. This contributes to a subjective-social-ecological-spiritual impact (SSES) for more fulfilling lives on planet Earth.
CHAOS es un proyecto expositivo -producto de una investigación artística exploratoria – que busca mostrar distintas formas de vivir la vida en el planeta tierra (pluriversidades existenciales).
El mismo lo voy ejecutando a lo largo de mí cotidianeidad, realizando obras artísticas en formato de retratos fotográficos y relatos escritos, sobre los entes que voy conociendo y entablando relación. Me refiero a “entes” porque amplío la posibilidad de establecer vínculos con existencias humanas y no humanas, como animales, insectos, plantas, minerales, fenómenos naturales, juguetes, artículos industriales, comunidades, etc. Cada uno tiene su “relato personal” (RP), una forma presente de experienciar su existir (su forma de vivir la vida), el cual busco conocer y compartir al mundo. Cada RP es único y, a la vez, en su convergencia con otros RP forman el “relato común” (RC). El RC es lo que cuenta un conjunto de entes (sociedad, manada, país, institución, comunidad, etc) sobre cómo viven la vida. Con Proyecto CHAOS busco mostrar cómo van confluyendo las diferencias de los entes en un RC específico (la comunidad, territorio donde estoy habitando en el momento).
El proyecto lo inicié en el año 2019 en la Patagonia Argentina y actualmente extiende sus horizontes en Estados Unidos, donde nací y resido actualmente. Los retratos y relatos son de carácter documental experimental. Su primer formato expositivo es en mí página web www.mariangelamussatti.com , también voy presentando cada una de sus etapas (territorios explorados) en exposiciones físicas. El objetivo de compartir este material artístico es abrir la posibilidad a los espectadores a que conozcan, no solo otras existencias, sino, otros relatos de cómo se vive y se puede vivir en el planeta tierra. Animando así, a que pluriversifiquen su propio RP, abriéndose en su cotidiano a establecer nuevos vínculos de parentesco (con entes que, tal vez, antes no veían).
Tomo el concepto de caos (CHAOS) para señalar que en esta convergencia de los RP en RC, no es estática, sino un constante devenir. Problematizo el quietismo discursivo y la estandarización de los RC (aquellos discursos normativos controlados por sectores de poder), que en vez de nutrirse de las diferencias vivenciales de los RP, pregonan modelos existenciales fijos sobre lo que es vivir, coaccionando y limitando a los entes.
Con Proyecto CHAOS tengo cómo objetivo mostrar al mundo entes en su diferencia y originalidad (su ruido/caos en la estandarización normativa del vivir) valorizandolos en su RP, focalizando la mirada en aquellos que aún no son vistos o cuentan con poca difusión global. Potenciando así la apertura y replanteamiento de RP/RC en los entes/comunidades retratados (que hacen insight al momento verse y escucharse en sus retratos y relatos), en los espectadores (que se cuestionan y abren su relato cuando ven a un diferente) y en mi misma. Aportando a un impacto SSEE (subjetivo-social-ecológico-espiritual) para existencias más plenas en el planeta tierra.
