The outcomes of their stories, what they tell me and what I decipher—always from my subjectivity. I see them and they see me, we interpret and connect in different ways, we project ourselves, caring for and fighting, explicitly or only mentally. I fantasize or predict karmic stories from past lives, which converge in an inhospitable and familiar present. We had already seen each other's faces, and we meet again.
I am enveloped in a desire to understand where we see ourselves from in order to create new narratives.
The Latinx community is something that always made me uncomfortable, or at least that's what I remember. As an Argentine born but always a foreigner, it was difficult for me to recognize myself as Latinx; At the same time, not long ago I recognized myself as Argentine, seeing myself drinking mate, enjoying the national music of my country and seeing myself comfortable with the connections of my “new Age” that is no longer so new.
In the United States, I was forced to label myself as Latina. I'm reminded of this on every job application I fill out, as well as in the jobs I get. My strong accent, my relaxed physicality, my direct, physical affection. I meet "other Latinos" from diverse countries like El Salvador, Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile, Brazil, and Cuba, and the connection is almost immediate, the need to meet and verbalize what we're experiencing in this "northern" country, because we feel different, and that's when I feel equal—in some ways—with them. We embrace each other, in the need to feel part of it.
The first thing I can name are "strong women" who, although they came alone, with few financial resources, with a dream, sometimes with children or leaving them behind in search of a better future. Their strength of spirit, their feisty attitude, their ability to face adversity are what move me about them.
How majestic human nature is when it strives to live; it can become very creative. Creators of existence.
Competition, adversity, struggle and conquest, cheap whoring and pleasurable bonds, the Catholic apostle and the gospel, the holy mother who wants to take care of you.
