2022-2024
Unframed is a work of conceptual and existentialist art carried out in the period of 2023-2024. It is part of the Autografiarme Project, which is the continuity of the Marcos Blancos Series (MB, exhibited in 2023).
While in MB I addressed my childhood sexual abuse, in Unframed I delve into the so called “spiritual abuses” to which I exposed myself -naively-, as a young adult seeking to “redeem my past.”
This work had two moments of manifestation:
1) Physical elaboration of 12 pieces of textile collage.
Each piece represented my exorcism of other people’s existential frameworks, which I took in moments of anguish and despair in the face of the feeling of existential emptiness. It can be said that I had sought my consistency outside, making other people’s realities my own.
These works were wordy, noisy in colors and textures. Their elaboration was also a minimalist and silent act, because that is how I was left after making them -I perceive myself as my greatest creation-.
Eight (8) works were of clothing intervened with the textile collage technique.
The materials with which I made the works had an important role, because they functioned as ‘symbols’. Used, gifted or created garments, shiny buttons and bows inherited, yarns that I made on trips. Without planning it, the clothes and objects were given to me by people with similar existential experiences. Being aware of the origin of the materials is why I sewed, embroidered and painted “symbols”. One material/symbol was joined to another material/symbol for alchemy to occur.
The goal of Unframed was always to ‘exorcize’ my life, which I record as symbolic, emotional, physical and spiritual story. My emotions present at the time of creating made the artistic work very heavy at times. Each work reflects a moment of internal embrace, I am my story and not only that.
At the beginning of the work, I was worried about the aesthetics of the works, because they were used and worn clothes, with little balls, or because I was afraid that moths would attack the work. Today I feel that everything was part of it, because the work expresses my life experience, including unpleasant situations in which I fell apart, became wrinkled and used up my colors, my creativity. I reinvented the garments in an artistic project, I reinvented my life in Art. Exorcism.
2) Physical disintegration of the work and its transmutation into video art format.
The work culminated with the actual burning of the 12 textile pieces. Symbolizing the ultimate integration of the exorcist process, as when dying, we integrate life leaving our body behind.
Today the work Desenmarcados is a single piece with a video art exhibition format, which aims to interact with the environment.
